Book Collecting

“Good as it is to inherit a library, it is better to collect one.”

Augustine Birrell, “Book-Buying,” Obiter Dicta (1887)

I have to agree with this.  There’s something extra rewarding about discovering a long-sought-after book on the shelves of a quaint shop or even online.  Of course, I prefer the quaint shop experience, but sadly they are becoming extinct.  Our local used-and-rare bookshop went out of business this year after the death of the owner, and it is a great loss to our community.
