Today is the first class day for my high school literature class for our homeschool co-op.
When I taught my first group class 4 years ago, I mostly lectured, anxious to cram the information into my students. My teaching style has evolved so that now I teach almost entirely by leading class discussion. I’ve found this to be MUCH more effective.
Some students are eager to talk, while others are reluctant. So I planned an ice-breaker for the first day’s class. Here’s the assignment I posted:
Think about the books you have most enjoyed reading and why. Choose one book to tell us about during class discussion. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a book that was assigned for school reading (although it can be), and you don’t have to prepare a book report. Just be ready to tell us why you liked that book. (No spoilers, please!)
I figure this should take off the pressure to say the “right” thing and make it easier for even the shyest students to speak up.
I’m looking forward to hearing what they have to say…and it occurred to me that I want to hear from YOU as well! Please leave a comment and tell us what you like about one of your favorite books.
Hi MJ. Well, one of my favorites is Heart of Darkness. I don’t usually like testosterone-ridden, dark books, but Conrad is such a remarkable craftsman, and the inevitable pull of the center of the book, and the heart of the river, is compelling to me. I assigned this book to my 10th graders 4 years ago, and faced mutiny. But I still like it.
I remember hating Heart of Darkness when I read it in high school or college. BUT Conrad was a huge influence on F. Scott Fitzgerald, so I ought to give him another try. Thanks for the reminder!
Class went very well! Every student had something valuable to share, and everyone seemed pretty comfortable. Great first day back in class!
