The Pleasure of Reading Outdoors

It has been too hot and humid here in north Mississippi to stay outside even at 8:00 a.m. or 10:00 p.m. (Imagine a hot, wet blanket hitting you in the face every time you open the door.)  But the past few days have been comparatively cool (70s instead of high 80s) in early mornings and late evenings, and this afternoon it was so downright pleasant and breezy that I read aloud to the boys in the shade of our front yard at 2:00 p.m.!  This would have been unthinkable two weeks ago.  I was so comfortable I nearly dozed off in my lawn chair in the middle of The Swiss Family Robinson!

Reading aloud to my boys outdoors is one of the great pleasures of homeschooling.  My delight was only reinforced by the mailman asking my 13yo, “Shouldn’t you be in school today?” and my son replying, “We’re doing school right now!”  Ahhhhh….
