When Monte Cristo reveals his identity to Villefort and sees Villefort’s dead wife and child…
“Monte Cristo became pale at this horrible sight; he felt he had passed beyond the bounds of vengeance, and that he could no longer say, ‘God is for and with me.’” (The Count of Monte Cristo, p. 1403)
Wish I’d noticed this quote when posting earlier on Providence. I see that Monte Cristo at least reached a point where he no longer felt that he was acting as an agent of Providence…but I still don’t see how he could realistically think earlier that he was an agent of Providence when his only motivation was revenge.
