The pleasures of reading itself—who doesn’t remember?—were like those of a Christmas cake, a sweet devouring.
~ Eudora Welty
I found this quote from Welty’s “A Sweet Devouring” in The Open Door: When Writers First Learned to Read, in which 29 writers recall their discovery of books and reading. Writers include Benjamin Franklin, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Will Durant, Winston Churchill, A. A. Milne, C. S. Lewis, and more. I need to put this back on my nightstand, but I’m afraid the Leaning Tower of Tomes will topple….

Your quote reminds me of one of my favorites —
“There are many people — happy people, it usually appears — whose thoughts at Christmas always turn to books. The notion of a Christmas tree with no books under it is repugnant and unnatural to them.” — Robertson Davies, The Merry Heart (1997)
This puts me in mind of all those books I’ve ordered from you in the past, many of which went under the Christmas tree!
