{"id":53,"date":"2005-10-07T19:20:56","date_gmt":"2005-10-07T19:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eclectic-bibliophile.com\/blog\/?p=53"},"modified":"2010-05-08T19:28:48","modified_gmt":"2010-05-08T19:28:48","slug":"is-our-society-really-that-dependent-on-professional-educators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/eclectic-bibliophile.com\/blog\/is-our-society-really-that-dependent-on-professional-educators\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Our Society Really That Dependent on Professional Educators?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s wrong with this picture?<\/p>\n<p>A recent newspaper article on our local library  mentioned the popularity of its after-school tutoring program and cited  the example of a woman tutoring a third-grader who was learning about  clocks and money.<\/p>\n<p>This didn&#8217;t strike me as particularly noteworthy  until I read the tutor&#8217;s comment that\u00a0sometimes &#8220;parents stay  downstairs and read while their children are being tutored.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I certainly\u00a0approve of\u00a0parents reading at the  library,\u00a0but for crying out loud!\u00a0 Any literate parent could teach a  9-year-old child about clocks and money with a $3.00 workbook from  Wal-Mart!\u00a0 Why on earth is a\u00a0tutor needed for that?\u00a0 For that matter,  they could skip the workbook altogether and use a real clock and a\u00a0few  trips to the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>This is an excellent example of how professional  educators have brainwashed our society into dependence on their  &#8220;expertise.&#8221;\u00a0 Most people just assume that they are not capable of  &#8220;teaching&#8221; their children anything that is typically taught in school.\u00a0  How much they<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u2014<\/span>and  their children<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u2014<\/span>are  missing out on!<\/p>\n<p>Mary Jo Tate<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s wrong with this picture?
