{"id":265,"date":"2005-08-13T20:51:26","date_gmt":"2005-08-13T20:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eclectic-bibliophile.com\/blog\/?p=265"},"modified":"2010-05-08T20:51:56","modified_gmt":"2010-05-08T20:51:56","slug":"fitzgeralds-the-offshore-pirate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/eclectic-bibliophile.com\/blog\/fitzgeralds-the-offshore-pirate\/","title":{"rendered":"Fitzgerald&#8217;s &#8220;The Offshore Pirate&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The other day I  was\u00a0writing about one of Fitzgerald&#8217;s early stories, &#8220;The Offshore  Pirate,&#8221; and I came across a wonderful line that I just had to share:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Five o&#8217;clock rolled down from the sun and  plumped soundlessly into the sea.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Beautiful!<\/p>\n<p>Fitzgerald had originally ended the story  with\u00a0the explanation that it had all been a dream, but he, or possibly  someone at <em>The Saturday Evening Post, <\/em>realized that was rather  lame, and he replaced it with\u00a0one of the best magazine-story endings  ever written:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;reaching up on her tiptoes she kissed him  softly in the illustration.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t a dream&#8230;it was all an invention of  Fitzgerald&#8217;s fertile imagination. &#8220;Look at what I can do!&#8221; he proclaims  in the ebullience of his early success.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to read this or Fitzgerald&#8217;s other  stories, the best collection is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;tag=mjtate-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg\/detail\/-\/0684842505\/ref=lpr_g_1?v=glance%26s=books\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"color: #000066;\">The Short Stories of F.
